Part V: La Belle Dame sans Merci
Siegfried, greatest Hero of Man, descended from the All-Father himself, lies dying in a pool of his own blood, run through with his own sword, Nothung, Destroyed by the Wrath of the Valkyrie he betrayed. In death, however, the glamour of Odin has been broken and he sees Brünnhilde as his beloved, not as as the maker of his doom, forgetting the life he has led for the last year. Yet, the Valkyrie does not know of Odin’s meddling and believes Siegfried betrayed her for Gudrun and left her to the rapacious lust of Gudrun’s brother Gunther. He seeks Valhalla, and she casts him to Hel. Only upon the departure of Siegfried’s soul and the final shattering of Nothung, a weapon strong enough to unravel all his plans, does Loki come to Brünnhilde and reveal the deceit her father Odin has wrought. He uses her anger to draw her into his plot to destroy the gods, not revealing that Odin was himself deceived into clouding the memory of Siegfried by none other than Loki, disguised as one of the Fates.
